Animal Myths And Legends

Fire Salamander

There is a amphibian which is thought to be able to withstand fire and to emerge from it unburnt. Yes its Fire Slamander. The Fire Salamander is a lizard-like amphibian which is nocturnal, brightly coloured and strictly carnivorous. Its habit of resting in dry logs and wood has caused the myth; as it emerges from the log when a person unknowingly puts it into the fireplace for burning. No two Fire Salamanders are alike in their skin pattern.

Nile Crocodile

There is a reptile, worshiped by the Egyptians, is still respected in monasteries in Pakistan despite being feared as a man-eater. It’s the Nile crocodile. It is a slightly smaller relative of the Crocodile family, but it is well-known for its ferocity. Although greatly written about and highly respected in ancient times, their numbers are falling steadily because of poaching and today they cannot be seen along the Nile, only on the shores of Lake Albert and the Victoria Nile. They can weigh up to 100kg and eat fish, insects and other invertebrates.

In South India a bird of prey is worshipped as Garuda, the vehicle of Lord Vishnu. This bird is also known as the Brahminy Kite. It is chestnut and white coloured hawk whoch is very common in South India. It is mainly found along the coasts and is an expert fish feeder. It has become partially dependent on man and relies a lot on the fishermen's catch for its food. This mainly because the people do not trouble it and instead rever it thinking it to be the vehicle of Lord Vishnu in Hindu mythology.
